Carlton Zapp was Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera's assistant. He started working at Hanna-Barbera in the 80's and he was by their side until they passed away.
Carlton Zapp is an amazing person! He's got a heart of gold!
I was joined by Wendy Brydge and Alexa Lawlor for this interview. We enjoyed every second of this interview and by the end, our faces hurt from smiling and laughing so much! Carlton told us about his life, his work at Hanna-Barbera and he told us some great stories! I love how he calls them all his "dudes"! You can really feel that everything he says is from the heart. He loved working with these people!
Carlton also sent some amazing pictures of him with the greats - Bill Hanna, Joe Barbera, Iwao Takamoto, Jerry Eisenberg, and more. You can see the pictures throughout the episode.
I had a question that I forgot to ask him. I had read an article that said Joe Barbera used a pen that contained his genetic material to sign his limited edition cels in order to keep counterfeiters away . When I asked Carlton, he said that was false, that Joe Barbera just used a sharpie. Is it possible he used the genetic pen only on cels and sharpies on everything else?
This interview was 5 seconds shy of 3 hours edited, but it goes fast because Carlton has so many great things to say. He also shares some amazing advice he got from Mr. Hanna and Mr. Barbera, which you can find the clip to the advice below.
A huge shout out to Scott Jeralds for connecting us with Carlton!
Hope you enjoy the episode!
