My Review of Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob
“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”

I love anything medieval and especially if it has dragons, so I was super excited when this movie was announced! I enjoyed the movie and I think it is one of the better Scooby movies that has been released in a while.
The nod to The Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet" (and also the "Gremlin on a Plane" episode from Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!) at the beginning of the movie had me thinking that things weren't going to be what they seem with this movie.
I do think it was predictable. Some of the scenes they showed leading up to the gang time traveling led me to believe that they weren't really time traveling. There also wasn't really a mystery. We know Morgan La Fey wanted the throne and that she would stop at nothing to get it. It felt more like the gang was in a dream while I was watching it.
The gang traveled to Norville Der Morgana, where Shaggy's ancestors were from, though we never got to meet any of Shaggy's family members. I would have thought that he had to have at least 1 relative in the town. It was kind of a missed opportunity.
Shaggy screaming like a girl was a really funny and an unexpected moment. I had to rewind that a couple times to watch it again and I laughed every time.
It was nice to see Daphne take on all the male knights and take them all down. She was strong and fearless and it's nice to see her like that. It was funny when King Arthur called Daphne a non-man. In that time, women couldn't do anything that men could do, so for them to see a woman fighting would have been unheard of.
Velma used her brains to figure everything out, though there were times in the movie that I thought she was a bit naïve about what was going on. Fred got to come up with an anti-trap trap to get past Morgan La Fey's traps that she set. Shaggy and Scooby got to eat a lot of food in the movie along with King Arthur who also liked food.
Thundarr the Barbarian guest stars in the movie. He helps the gang get through the traps and rescue Shaggy. Thundarr The Barbarian was produced by Ruby-Spears Productions from 1980 to 1983.
Great review. I pretty much agree with you.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I hate and it's been an issue with me for the longest time, it that these movies are no longer MYSTERIES!!!! And they haven't been forever. They get into these misadventures with these special guest stars but there really is no 'mystery' to solve most of the time.
Besides that they are always fun to watch and I love the little easter eggs like you mentioned, the HB reference, the Barney Rubble reference, etc...
Thanks to you as always N.

I do like that they have been putting a lot of references in the movies lately.
DeleteI really liked this movie too! It was definitely a welcome change from Return to Zombie Island and Curse of the 13th Ghost. There were definitely aspects of it that I thought could have been better. I didn't care for how they made Merlin silly, and Daphne's quirky characterization felt off to me. I loved her in Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, but this felt kind of like they were trying to copy it in a generic way, which made it feel off. I really liked the film for the most part, though!
ReplyDeleteYes, I did feel like Merlin should have been more serious. This does prove that the quirkiness of Be Cool doesn't really work with the more classic animation style.
DeleteI have been wanting this movie and it sounds like a fun little movie. I like the references to other HB series and saw the mention of Thundarr the Barbarian and I do remember that being a Ruby-Spears production. I thought that was pretty clever, too. Wonder if any references will be made to another RS property that was closely tied to other Scooby series--mainly this series was usually shown alongside Scooby-Doo series. The show in question is "The Puppy's Further Adventures"/"The Puppy's New Adventures". Just curious.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about that show, The Puppy's Further Adventures. I haven't seen any references to that show in Scooby, but you never know. They seem to be adding references to other RS/HB shows, so it's possible.
